CLIMATE Being on the coast in south-east Enera, Ellsport is warm for most of the year. Silva Rainforest just north of it brings a good deal of rain, however. The rainfall is limited depending on the direction the winds are blowing, and they tend to blow from east to west, driving the rains away. When it does rain, it pours. Rainy days mean an hour or so of heavy rain before a break lasting a few hours. The river Sulis along with the sea keep the temperature fairly constant throughout the year, making Ellsport quite mild. Summers are warm, winters less so, and rain is just as frequent at any given point in the year as any other point in the year. Snow is not often seen in winter. DESCRIPTION A reasonably large town, Ellsport owes its success to its port. Because of this, an extensive harbour is built around the seafront. The only beach left is at the outskirts of the town; the rest of the coast is built up with moorings for boats. The seafront is still an extremely pleasant place to visit; restaurants and shops line the streets facing out to sea, allowing people to eat on tables outside right next to the water. This is best on sunny days or at sunset, where orange and red glitter off the sea. The buildings themselves are very pretty around the seafront and centre of town, as well as along the river. They are small and cosy with a friendly and warm atmosphere. The area is largely padestrianised due to traffic problems developed in the past. Now the only roads through town are for lorries shipping or collecting goods and passengers for ferries. The docks around the river are fairly run-down. There is an industrial area of town just outside the centre, which is full of grey concrete and warehouses. This is the least appealing area and is generally not visited. Goods from all over the world are stored here to be sent out across Enera, and likewise goods from Enera are prepared for trips to other parts of the world. The housing districts are nicer, spacious with gardens rich in exotic plants thanks to the close proximity of the rainforest. The warmth and rain make growing things easy. Even in town, hanging baskets are seen on streetlights and walls, and trees line the smooth tarmac streets. For those with no house to live or stay in, hotels of all standards can be found in the town centre or close by. There is a Pokémon Centre too, which will heal Pokémon and offer low quality but cheap accommodation for all trainers, breeders and coordinators. Professor Pine's laboratory is located on the outskirts of town where he can freely expand his plot of land without anyone minding. The lab is at the northmost point of the town, close to the rainforest that hugs its borders. His land extends all around him, including out to the river. HISTORY Etymology: Ellsport's name comes from its founder, Ellis. Over time, 'Ellis' Port' became simply 'Ellisport' and then 'Ellsport'. Ellsport was founded in Enera's early days. A Kalosian man named Ellis made his way across the sea over a thousand years ago. He captained a large boat filled mostly with supplies rather than men. His expedition was not one aiming to invade, but simply one to find somewhere to settle and trade. He and his men never returned to Kalos, settling by the nearest river they landed to and setting up a roaring trading business. They built more boats, these ones designed to go up and down the river Sulis buying from one town and selling to another several dozen miles away for an increased price. At first it was a small cluster of houses, but the wealth attracted workers to start a life in Ellsport working on the boats. More and more houses sprawled out along the sea and river, and many boatyards were constructed. Thriving markets grew and the town soon buzzed with life. The majority of its residents were sailors or workers in the docks, but the town was always full with merchants, wealthy people and nobles wanting to buy valuable items, and travelers stopping off before catching a boat. It teemed with life right from the start. Pokémon from Silva Rainforest were strong and used to protect things, the other Pokémon nearby being weak inhabitants of Route One. These were handy in disputes with nearby villages over use of the river as well as pirates, smugglers and thieves. Being so far south, Ellsport never had a problem with panserbørne or witches. Life in Ellsport was fairly consistent even as Enera developed. It remained a rich town, but took less part in intellectual development as all its efforts were still needed in its boats. This did mean several key expeditions by boat began in Ellsport. The first voyage to discover another region, proving that there was something else and the sea wasn't the end of the world, set out from Ellsport. From then the docks spread out to the seafront as boats began traveling to and from Hoenn with rarer goods and previously unseen Pokémon. Ellsport was affected by the war with Kanto and Johto once those lands had been discovered. The coast around it was torn up, the town told to be spared but suffering great numbers of robberies and destruction of buildings, as well as abuse of all forms towards citizens. By the end of the war the port town was economically crippled, allowing Brimburg to race ahead of them as Enera's largest port, remaining superior to Ellsport to this day. The Industrial Revolution brought about long-overdue change in Ellsport. Steam powered ships brought faster travel and less hard work for sailors. It was still tough going, but it had never been better. Steam brought an economic boost, improved living conditions, and the jealousy of other nations that would eventually lead to war through Enera's reluctance to share their secrets. Ellsport sprouted huge numbers of factories and warships swarmed around it, Enerian soldiers filling the town before leaving to fight. It was briefly under siege before its own ships broke through the barrier of enemy ships. Great amount of destruction befell the town and its primary focus was on warfare rather than its people, to they emerged from the Industrial War devastated. Since then, Ellsport has rebuilt itself, although scars of the war from 200 years ago remain. Progress was slow for a long while, but eventually its large number of ships earned the town enough money to rebuild itself. People began to live there in greater numbers again, and not in poverty. Life was getting better once more, and technology improved faster than ever. Bitterness about the Industrial War never quite left the town, however.
