► "Yay, a vacation in the Safari Zone!" Ajax exclaimed upon finally seeing the building which was the main office of the Element Safari, located a good 20 minutes walk from the main city of Aniford. Nyx, in Ninetails form, gave a small laugh of amusement, though the simultaneous flick of her nine tails suggested that she was happy to relax for a change as well. "Well, it's not quite a vacation. When we leave this place, we'll have a new member on our team. So we can't take just anyone, you have to be careful who you use the Safari Ball on. It can't just be someone who is friendly - we need someone willing and able to take on the League Challenge, so we can get back to Leon and Lycia." Ajax nodded agreement. "True. But hopefully they'll be friendly too." Then he paused. "I heard they have zones for every kind of Pokemon in here. Do you think we'll find a Scyther in there? Or a Scizor? I'd really, really like to meet one someday..." he closed his claw tightly, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Nyx nuzzled his hand, though she shook her head. "I wouldn't expect it, Ajax. Scyther are very rare. But there are plenty of other species that would make great partners and fit in well with the rest of the team." «

► Walking inside the doors, Ajax paid the fee for the Safari Zone to the person behind the counter, patiently read the pamphlet explaining the rules of the Safari Zone, and went into the next room where he was given his 10 Safari Balls and camouflage outfit. He had to forgo the shirt (it would not fit over his claw), but he at least managed to put on the pants and vest. "Alright, let's do this," he told Nyx, who nodded and morphed into a Glaceon (so she wouldn't be quite as intimidating to the Safari pokemon) and jumped up onto his shoulder. Breathing in, Ajax stepped inside the elevator leading to the Safari Zone. It was only a few moments and a ding, and they were standing in the Element Safari. «

It took Nadia and Rafe some days to reach Aniford City, but once they got there, they couldn't wait to embark on a new adventure. Now that Nadia was in a town, she was feeling more confident and less like she had to stay up all night to make sure nothing was attacking her. However, due to the strain of her journey, she was rather tired, but Rafe was spending as much time as possible trying to cheer her up.

The one who was best at cheering her up, however, was the little corsola she had obtained from Professor Pine. Cora, as she was now called, had an indomitable spirit and now that she was discovering a fledgling sense of confidence, she was happy to talk with Nadia and Rafe all day long.

"Where are we going?" She asked, and Nadia picked her up.

"To the Element Safari to see if we can find some new friends," Nadia answered. feeling slightly apprehensive but also hopeful to find a new friend for her team. Cora was an amazing partner and the perfect choice for her, but she was interested in meeting pokemon of all different types, as well.

It took about twenty minutes to find the building, and she paid the fee and walked into the safari with her team. Oddly enough, there was already someone there, and that someone had a daemon in the form of a glaceon accompanying him. "Hi!" Rafe waddled up, still in vileplume form, and poked the glaceon-daemon.

"Um, hi, he's Rafe, and I'm Nadia, and this is my friend Cora," she indicated the corsola wriggling around in her arms. "Are you looking to catch a new pokemon? I am too. I'd love any pokemon of any type. I mean, psychic or dragon or steel would be great, but I would just like to make a new friend. Have you been here before? Do you know how this place works?"

► No sooner had Ajax said "Let's do this," he heard the whirr and ding of another elevator nearby. Nyx on his shoulder jumped, whipping around to face whatever person might come out. He turned around with surprise. It was a young lady about a foot taller than him, which was no surprise really, seeing as he was only ten. "Er, greetings?" he said uneasily as they approached him. The young lady had a Vileplume daemon, and it was getting very close...he took a step back to make sure he didn't touch Rafe, knowing how taboo that was, but before he got too far back, the Vileplume had poked Nyx. It took all the poor girl's poise and control to not hiss angrily at Rafe and swipe threateningly at him. She stiffened and her claws scraped against Ajax's metal shoulder, which caused an adrenaline rush in him as well, huge Scizor-claw opening instinctively. Even though his size was that of a tiny waif compared to most adults, in general nobody really tried to talk to him due to his huge claw and eccentric appearance. He jumped back now, Nyx swiftly leaping off his shoulder and morphing into a Skarmory, her most defensive form. Ajax stood poised with the gigantic pincer open, scared and confused with Nyx's tense emotions coursing through him, ready to fend off Nadia or run at any moment. «

► Before they could actually say anything, though, the young lady was suddenly introducing herself in a shy and friendly manner. What? Ajax's confusion grew and his fear dropped somewhat. He took another step back, frowning but lowering his claw a little. Nyx stood stock still as a Skarmory, now the tallest out of all of them and towering defensively over Ajax, crimson eyes glaring at Rafe. Ajax shook his head at her, running his small hand gently across her back to try to calm her down. The girl, Nadia, and her daemon and her little Corsola just seemed overly friendly, not hostile...even if his heart was hammering at Nyx being approached so quickly by another daemon. The last time had been...He blinked sharply to rid himself of the memory. "Er, my apologies miss Nadia, your approach took us off guard," he said in strangely formal language as he looked up at Nadia. "Actually, yes, we did come here to catch a Pokemon. I'm also in particular looking for a Dragon-type, though a Psychic- or Steel- type would be an enjoyable partner for the team as well." And see a Scyther or Scizor, he said to himself, but that was probably an impossible dream anyway. "As for our names, I am Ajax Reiotir, and my daemon is named Nyx." «

"I'm so sorry," Nadia blushed as Rafe unabashedly poked the boy's daemon. Rafe was a curious soul who had no idea of personal boundaries, so it was always interesting to see what kind of shenanigans he would get into. It was, of course, necessary to be polite as well... but she was completely not expecting the boy to have a claw. Staring slightly longer than was socially appropriate, she blushed again and muttered, "So, dragon types... Ajax? And it's nice to meet you too, and your daemon. It's cool that she can turn into different forms like that, Rafe stays like a vileplume most of the time."

Rafe rolled his eyes and Cora squeaked a bit, wiggling in her trainer's arms. "I'm sorry for taking you off guard... I'm new to this whole trainer thing and I'm just looking to make new friends. So you're interested in dragon types, too? Do you know where we might be able to find them?" She berated herself for her awkwardness in her head, but began to keep a lookout for new pokemon.

"Well, erm, and ghosts, if they're nice," she added, almost as an afterthought, but truth be told she had been thinking about ghost types since her encounter with the golett at Professor Pine's. Even though she had chosen Cora, and was happy with her choice, she still couldn't help but feel a little bit disappointed that she had let the ghost down. And if other ghosts were as nice as he was, she would be happy to meet one... but only if they held the same views on pranks as the golett she once considered to be her starter.

Finally, she turned to the water and rock type in her arms. "Cora, let me know if you see anyone you'd like to be friends with," Nadia said, and the corsola squirmed again. Such a big responsibility! But she was going to take it very seriously. Putting aside her dancing for now, she craned her eyes to see if she could find anything intriguing.

► Now came the staring at his massive Scizor-pincer. Even though he could tell she was embarrassed, it relaxed Ajax in a way, as it felt more like what he was used to on a daily basis. Nyx simply narrowed her eyes at Nadia, still not forgiving her or Rafe, but Ajax replied more amiably to Nadia's comment. "I heard that most young people's daemons can change into almost anything they please. Nyx only has a few forms, the two you saw and Ninetails. She isn't able to turn into anything else for some reason." Nyx switched her glaring target from Nadia to her human. Her expression, he could plainly tell, snarled How could you reveal a weakness like that to her? Ajax shook his head slightly.  For some reason, despite Rafe's poke, he felt like Nadia was not a threat, nor the shy little Corsola she carried. He ignored Nyx's seething gaze and continued talking to Nadia in a speech that was strangely polite and articulate for one so young. "From what I read on the information boards, we were supposed to recieve 10 Safari Balls that are very likely to catch any Pokemon we might use them on." He pointed to a camo pouch attached to his thigh bulging with small spheres before continuing, "Once we catch one Pokemon we're not allowed to catch any more, but we can still stay and talk to other Pokemon. As for Dragon-types, I heard they like to live in caves and mountains." He pointed with his single hand towards a craggy mountain in the distance that looked a little more foreboding and dangerous than some of other steppes and mountainous areas that surrounded the Safari. "Perhaps there?" «


► The small Scizor pokemorph began walking through the grass towards the mountain. It looked like it might be a bit of a walk, perhaps even 30 minutes to an hour away. He frowned. "Nyx, how do you think we should get there?" The Skarmory-daemon scowled,  and said flatly, "How about I fly you up there in five minutes." "Er....a walking way," he said, petting her between the shoulder blades to try to calm her down. It was interesting that normally she was the one to calm him down, and now it was quite the opposite. "What about that forest? It looks like it could be a shortcut. Though it does look a little..." Ajax blinked, not sure how to describe it. It was certainly a forest, but the trees looked almost black in color, and extremely dense. All the light from the sun would be blocked out inside, and it looked like the only light source would be some strange, unearthly blue spheres of light that seemed to hang around the trees. It seemed...spooky somehow. "It must be the ghost path," Nyx stated what he was about to say, finally seeming to have mellowed out a bit, although she stole suspicious glances at Rafe every now and then. «

The paths grew darker, the sunlight replaced by a gloomy dimness. At first there was silence, but after a few steps a few indistinct sounds could be heard from far away. Perhaps they were closer, it was hard to tell. Laughter might have been in there, maybe footsteps, leaves rustling, a voice whispering, it was impossible to tell as every time the sounds were concentrated on they faded away. It was as if the noises were out of focus. The gloom was streaked with dark shadows cast by twisted old trees. So gnarled and bent they were it was easy to imagine their shadows as hunched beasts or figures. Breezes stirred the leaves from time to time, creating illusions of movement from within. Despite all this no definite proof of life could be detected. Then again, that was fairly appropriate for ghosts, beings not truly living yet not quite dead either.

Something real and living - ish - was stirring nearby. Up ahead and to the left a pair of eyes could be seen watching the group. There was nothing to draw attention to them so it was entirely possible for them to be missed completely. The owner of the eyes, a Misdreavus, had decided that was not to be. Why let people walk right on by and lose the chance to have some fun? She grinned a malicious grin, she disappeared back into the trees, picking a quiet route around and waiting for the group to pass. Once they were in front of her, she leaped out right behind the and let out an almighty shriek. The wailing sounded like a human scream, an ear-splitting high pitched scream of fear and pain. No one was actually in trouble, of course - Misdreavus was excited to see her latest victims' reactions.

((The random generator was very kind to you on the first go, but I decided it might be more fun to make Nadia and Ajax explore and work a bit to discover them if that's OK!))

"Aaaaaieeeeeeeeeee!" Nadia shrieked at a pitch she had never heard come out of her mouth before. She abruptly dropped Cora, who bounced off of her foot and then tried to scramble back up her body. Rafe turned his head around and around, looking for the source of the mysterious noise.

"Ajax, did you hear that?!" Nadia asked, then flushed a bit since it would literally be impossible to not have heard that. She knelt down to pick up Cora's rocky body and held it against her. Even though Cora was not particularly soft, it was reassuring for Nadia to have someone to hug nearby. For a few moments she stayed silent, embarrassed that Ajax had seen her have such an immature and girlish reaction to what was probably a ghost type playing a prank.

Her first impression was that she did not want to meet the creature making that sound that grated on her ears. But if there were any friendly ghost types, she would be amenable to making their acquaintance. "Um," she called out, finding her voice a bit hoarse from the sheer volume of her shriek. "Hi, I'm Nadia, are there any nice ghosts around?" Still too embarrassed to talk to Ajax, thinking that he must believe her to be some kind of idiot.

Rafe, however, was not feeling shy at all. "Come on out, whoever you are, we're not going to hurt you," he called in the general direction of the misdreavus. "That was one heck of a scream."

"Thanks," Nadia whispered, believing his words to be a vote of confidence before realizing he was talking about the ghost pokemon. Her mouth snapped shut again and she kept walking along the path, periodically checking inside bushes and around trees to see if there were any pokemon, but always keeping a close hold on the corsola chirping in her arms.

Ooc:// Oh yeah, I think we'll definitely doing a bit of wandering around. I'm guessing Nadia and Ajax will wander through the Ghost area for a while, then the Dragon area, then maybe the Psychic area and then probably return to catch the Pokemon they end up wanting  

► Nyx strutted through the forest, chin raised and bladed Skarmory wings tensed, ready to open outwards and shield Ajax at any moment. Being a Scizor-pokemorph, Ajax's eyesight was enhanced, even at nighttime, at the cost of an impaired sense of smell. The pupils in his pale yellow eyes became heavily dialaed in the gloom, and he took the lead of the group with Nyx walking warily close behind, his claw held aloft and tense. Nyx's eyes weren't quite as well adjusted to the dark, but were quite keen, and she had the prickling sense that something, someone, somewhere, was watching them. But this was a ghost-type area after all. There were bound to be many eyes on the group. All of a sudden, an earsplitting scream resounded from directly behind them. No sooner had Ajax vaulted backward to the rear, claw wide open and ready (though what could it really do against ghosts?), Nyx swooping into the air, another scream rent the air from the group. He whipped around, but feeling no panic from Nyx (who had seen everything from above) he realized it had just been Nadia. He lowered his pincer. "Erm...Maybe it wasn't a good idea to take this shortcut after all?" he said awkwardly after a very silent pause following the two screens. "Haha, uh, yeah I did hear that? Both of them," he added, not sure if she wanted her own fear to be known as well. Nyx shrugged. "Well, we are in a ghost-type area after all. They're famous for liking pranks." «


► Ajax did not think Nadia was an idiot, but he did think she seemed like of the typical types of girls he had known in his earlier childhood - nobleladies who were dainty and delicate. Only the Pokemorphs had fought and didn’t shirk from danger. It had probably been a mistake to take her through the Ghost-route shortcut, but they were in too deep now. Rafe was encouraging the Ghost type to come out, and Nadia was walking along the path now, checking in bushes and around trees. Ajax had a suspicion that at some point a ghost was going to jump out at her if she kept doing that. “How about I do that,” he offered, running up ahead of Nadia and beginning to peer behind trees and around bushes. Nyx rolled her eyes, and continued walking in the middle of the path, though she peered around, trying to search for the source of the original scream. «

OoC:// So that's the plan? Okay, I'll roll with it - but I might know ahead of time who I want to catch

Nadia smiled sheepishly at Ajax's words, feeling like a little girl who had no self control. She was even more embarrassed when Rafe started calling out for pokemon - and Ajax beat her to the bushes and started looking around for himself. This was her first opportunity to prove that she could be brave, that she could really be someone, and here she was acting like a small child.

If she was going to overcome her fears, she had to go back to the first step. She had gone about things the wrong way from the start. "Um, the pokemon that yelled," she mumbled, then got a bit louder. "Did I do a good impression of you? I'm trying to do contests,"  she announced.

Cora, however, looked less convinced. "Laaaa?" she asked, poking Nadia with one of her rocky branches, but Nadia had to stay strong, and stay firm. She could not waver on something so important as making a new pokemon friend. And confidence had helped her befriend her starter...

Scary ghost or not, Nadia steeled her resolve, vowing to make a better second impression on Ajax than her first. Whether or not the misdreavus answered her call, she would continue poking through the bushes, looking for the most interesting pokemon and hoping that the next one might not be so... loud. Either way, her Safari adventure had only just begun...

Misdreavus grinned in delight at Nadia's response. A terrified scream! She had properly scared the human. She hadn't seen such a good reaction in a while. The younger one, the male with the claw, did not seem as fazed. His dæmon even sussed that it was just a ghost type's prank and nothing to worry about. Those two seemed more collected and ready to explain their problems than freak out, so of course a better reaction would be had from targeting the female who had proven she was more jumpy. That first attempt had been a success. More tries at scaring her could have similar results! Just then had been a cheap jump scare, so perhaps now she could try something better. To do that, it was a good idea to lead them off the path. Make them feel isolated and trapped. Then, once they grew more tense and frustrated, she could... well, she wasn't sure what she would do just yet.

There was no chance Misdreavus would answer when called. That would mean giving up the fun so soon! She was busy thinking how to drag the little group away from the main path. The Corsola the female had been holding had dropped to the ground in her fright. She'd been picked back up again, but the falling down had given the ghost an idea. Nadia looked like the sort of girl who would run after a Pokémon that went exploring, if the closeness with which she hugged Cora was anything to go by. Misdreavus did not know if it was likely to work, but somehow if she could persuade Cora to run off, Nadia was sure to follow. She first moved away to rustle some bushes. They were near enough to the path to be deemed safe to investigate, but far enough away for it not to be such a big step to draw the trainers even further astray. She made the bushes rustle more and more, allowing her shadow to be glimpsed darting between tree branches.

In case that failed to entice them, she moved to hide in branches a little in front of Nadia. "Little Corsola, come with me," she said to Cora, getting closer to the Corsola so that she could whisper to her, "I have something special for you to see. Your trainer will love you for finding it, I promise. It's a lot of fun, and it'll help you out in contests!" she invented some item the Pokémon might be interested in, failing to mention the exact identity of the made-up object. She let her voice drift away from Cora, hoping she would follow. This was a risky part; anyone present may overhear if their hearing was good enough, or might peek through the leaves and see her.

As soon as the bushes started to rustle, Rafe wandered over, poking at them with his flower, disingenuous. Cora, however, had no desire to explore... at least, not until she heard a whispering voice and saw the tiniest flicker of a shadow... what was the shadow talking about? Was it... really... did it have useful things for her? She had never really interacted with ghost types before the golett in Professor Pine's lab, but he was such a nice fellow, maybe this ghost was nice too...

She hopped down from Nadia's arms, landing a bit askew on her little stubby legs. Without stopping to talk to Nadia or Rafe, she simply walked towards the shadow, hoping that she would finally be able to find her courage and get this item and bring it back to Nadia and win ALL the contests and get ALL the hugs and...

"Er, Nadia?" Rafe motioned towards the scuttling corsola, but Nadia had already noticed. Why was Cora leaving her all of a sudden? She thought they were friends... but if they were in a ghost type forest... she wondered if Cora could be in danger as she poked a branch into the bush.

Nadia, trembling, turned to face Ajax. "Cora - my corsola - where is she going? Did you see something? I thought I saw a shadow..."

► Nyx kept a careful watch on everything around her, still ready to shield her human from any attacks if need be. Ajax was busy searching behind bushes and trees, so he did not notice the shadow flitting about in the forest, but it did not miss Nyx's sharp eyes. However, she assumed it was another ghost trying to scare them, so she continued to keep watch and didn't mention anything. That is, until she saw Nadia's Corsola's eyes glaze over and the little Water-type slip out of her trainer's arms and bounce towards the woods. Realizing that Cora would be lost within the forest in less than a minute, she clacked her beak, alerting Ajax. He turned just in time to see Cora's last couple of branches disappear into the brush, leaving the leaves quivering where she had gone off the path. «

► Nadia, who had of course felt Cora jump out of her arms, started getting worried, which was reasonable. Ajax hurried over to the area, peering through the trees and watching Cora's retreating silhouette. "Oh no, what if she was possessed or tricked by a spirit? She'll be lost soon, we have to after her!" he began pushing aside the bushes to go after the Corsola. Nyx hurriedly walked over, putting her head close to Ajax's and whispering so Nadia and Rafe couldn't hear. For the first time since the beginning of the Safari Zone, her voice had a tinge of real worry in it. "Ajax, not every Ghost pokemon just wants to play harmless pranks. Some of them desire to bring living souls to their side, or to inflict the same pain upon the living that they feel in their death, or felt in their lives. Some desire not to play a harmless prank, but one where living or dying is at stake. It may not be a good idea to go off the path." "But we have to," Ajax argued, loud enough so Nadia could hear. "Then Cora will really be lost! Besides, it will be an adventure," he grinned in the way only a cocky small boy who felt like he had control of whatever might happen could, and headed straight for Cora, whose bright pink body at least reflected the eerie light well. Nyx shook her head. Sometimes she felt years older than her soul-partner. "We better go after them," she commented to Nadia and Rafe - like she had a choice, soon feeling the unpleasant pull of being too far from her human. Even more alert than ever, she stalked into the forest after Ajax and Cora. «

"P...possessed by a...spirit?!" Nadia trembled, as she watched Cora descend into the murky jungle, out of her range of sight. "What could a spirit want with my Cora? Do they want to... oh, no, Cora... we have to get to her, now!" Straying no farther than one inch away from Rafe, she began to walk into the bushes, glad to have Ajax's support. Even though she hadn't met any of his pokemon yet, he looked quite strong with his pincer, and she suspected that any ghosts might be afraid of being snapped in half. At least, she hoped this fear would work in her favor, but she wasn't so sure about the ghosts in this part of the Safari. Were there any nice ones?

It was worth a try, so in between calling Cora's name loudly, she spoke about something new. "Um, hello?" She called out, cupping her hands around her mouth to amplify her voice. "Are there any, um, nice ghost types around? Nice ones who don't like stealing pokemon into the afterlife?" At this thought, a shiver ran up her body. What if the spirit had used Cora to lure her there to steal her soul... she edged closer and closer to Rafe until she was practically tripping over the vileplume-daemon.

Cora, on the other hand, was feeling a mixture of fear and exhilaration. She was about to do something that Nadia would be so proud of - and all thanks to making a new friend! "Hello, friend," she called out cheerily, "Where's the nice contest item?"

Her plan was working perfectly. Misdreavus only intended to frighten the group, not to cause them any physical harm, her species gaining sustenance from the fear of others around them. Fear alone was enough. Something she had not anticipated, however, was that leading the Corsola further away and making two trainers follow would draw the interests of more sinister ghosts nearby. She could see a few some distance away heading towards the group with interest. Most looked a lot stronger than she was. Oops. She felt a tinge of guilt but it was soon forgotten as she decided she didn't care much for what happened to the group so long as she had her fun. The Safari staff probably knew they were here, so while the danger was real and no one would register them as being missing for a long time, at least they would know where they'd gone missing and they had some chance of being found eventually.

"Friend? Friend?! You are too trusting. Look around. No one is here. No one to save you, no one to care. You are all alone, just you and me. I think I'll quite enjoy this time we have together, don't you?" Misdreavus moved swiftly in a circle around Cora, rustling bushes here and there and moving into view so a fleeting shadow would be glimpsed. She suddenly rushed up behind Cora and spoke right into her ear. "I don't think you know what pain is, not really, do you? Don't worry. I can teach you."

Meanwhile, a sense of confinement was building up around Ajax, Nyx, Nadia and Rafe as the ghosts neared. Most hid themselves, but a few pairs of glowing eyes could be seen here and there, the odd shape visible among the trees. The air felt like a small room with the walls moving in despite the outdoors location. A few ghosts noticed how young Ajax was and jumped at the chance of frightening a small child. They were so much easier to scare. One chuckled ominously near him, while another whispered an inaudible threat. A third actually went as far as gently touching his arm, a light tickle but definite contact. At that point the ghosts decided a line was crossed. A cold hand shot out from the leaves and grabbed Ajax's ankle without warning.

► Ajax moved quickly through the trees, dodging low-hanging branches and undergrowth. Nyx wove easily through the forest as well. Cora was moving surprisingly quickly for a stumpy little Pokemon, and all this darkness wasn't helping either. In fact, it seemed as if a fog were moving towards them, blotting out their vision. Nyx raced forward to catch up with Ajax, beak clenched shut tightly. She normally enjoyed forests, but in this one she felt claustrophobic and trapped. Ajax, too, was panting, even though normally he wouldn't even be breathing heavily after a simple light run. He was feeling the air was strangely heavy as well. Creepy laughter echoed near him, and he felt something cold - not leaves - tickling his arm. He gritted his teeth and tried to concentrate on Cora's bright pink body, muttering, "Go away! Give the Corsola back!" under his breath. «

► Ajax and Nyx were a good distance ahead of Nadia and Rafe, only several meters behind Cora - was there a shadow flitting about around her? Nyx strained to see what Pokemon it was - when, suddenly and unexpectedly, Ajax felt something icy in temperature grab his ankle. "AARRGGH!!" he let out a high-pitched, piercing yell as he faceplanted into the forest floor. He had been moving at a high velocity, so the fall was all the harther, but whichever ghost had grabbed his foot would feel quite a strong tug forward from his movement. The kid had quite a high density for his small size what with his claw and unusual amount of muscle for a small child. "Ajax!!!!!" yelled Nyx, immediately crouching above him and spreading out her bladed wings to create a cavern safe from harm around him.
